Olympic medal rankings 歐自行車展 逾2百台商參展

Olympic medal rankings let armchair athletes compete in a tribal sense. But armchair economists among them no doubt feel uneasy comparing the gold haul of China—population 1.34 billion—with, say, Jamaica, home to less than 3 million.

While China and the U.S. vie for leadership in absolute medals, London 2012's per-capita rankings are very different. Top spot goes to Grenada. The glory of its men's 400 meters gold will be shared by just 104,890 Grenadians. Second is New Zealand, with one medal for every 440,520 of its people.

And the larger nations of 60 million people or more? Top is host Britain at number 14, with a medal for every 1.3 million of the queen's subjects. The U.S. falls to 40th. But that is at least above China, ranked 59th with a medal for every 18.2 million of its many citizens.

Coming in last is India. As of Wednesday, it had one medal for every 310 million inhabitants. That is like Team USA coming home with a solitary medal—a scenario so devastating you could almost guarantee congressional hearings.
